about

In the Fall of 2019 two local dancers, Steve Sargent and Marcelle Lipke, approached me about doing a recording of the as-yet unreleased tunes in Fried Herman’s “Choice Morsels” book. The original idea was to have a duo or trio of musicians, but as time went on and musician’s schedules were juggled the Corona Virus settled in. In March, suddenly finding myself with a newly emptied calendar I floated the idea of doing the recording as a solo work. Steve and Marcelle agreed, and so I set right to it. Two months and a steep learning curve about multi-track recording later, the recording you hold came into being.
It’s very odd to play with only myself (perhaps this is why clergy and school psychologists have warned so fervently against it). I love the camaraderie and the idea-trading that occurs among bandmembers. With just myself as the melody and rhythm I have only my internal critics to guide me and trust me, they’re a harsh bunch. But I did not expect to enjoy the project as much as I did. I fell in love with the unusual tunes as well as the recording and mixing process. I hope you enjoy the music as much as I did.

Many huge thanks to my executive producer Steve Sargent, and to him and Marcelle Lipke for the original idea and for much valuable input. Thanks also to Marcelle for the gift of her expert graphic design. Much gratitude to Graham Christian whose erudite comments on the dances and titles are a joy to read for this album and also in his own publications. Thanks also the Lane Gibson Recording and Mastering Studio for the often unappreciated and very necessary task of cleaning up the various cuts and making them suitable for distribution. A huge thanks to the Boston Country Dance Society for providing me with the piano used on the recording - for this and many other things I am hugely in their debt. And lastly I’m grateful always for the feedback and encouragement of my wife Jeanne Morrill.
